Opening of GMU Sports and Recreation Centre Fast Approaching

The opening of the University's modern Sports and Recreation Centre is scheduled to take place in the second quarter of 2024. The construction of the complex began in the middle of 2022, and preparatory work back in 2020. Construction of the facility is being carried out by Budimex.

The GMU Sports and Recreation Centre is an investment project which is highly anticipated at GMU, especially by its main beneficiaries - the University's students. The second stage of the plans for the investment includes the construction of a new student residence which will be connected to the Centre via a skywalk.

The current state of progress was summed up recently by GMU Bursar Filip Malata:

At the end of 2023, 75% of the construction of the building had been completed. All work planned to date has been carried out and the building is already looking very good and as a notable addition to the local urban landscape is attracting the attention of University staff, students and residents.

Sanitary and electrical work was ongoing throughout the past year. Walls and columns were installed on the ground, 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors as well as ceilings above all of these levels. The stairs and interior walls and the drainage of groundworks and underground structures have been completed. The climbing wall has been fully installed in the main sports hall.

Part of the work is still ongoing, including plastering, wall cladding, the laying of floors and the construction of ceilings. Tasks awaiting completion include window and door joinery, as well as work on the roof and the building's elevation. Further construction work will take place in the vicinity of the building, including paving and asphalt and the laying of telecommunications cables.

The investment is financed from the state budget, in the form of a special subsidy from the Ministry of Infrastructure and the University's own resources. The total cost of the project is around 58 million PLN.

The new Sports and Recreation centre will include:

  • a full-size sports hall, including a climbing wall;
  • eight changing rooms with full sanitation facilities;
  • changing facilities for referees and employees with sanitation facilities;
  • rooms for team coaches;
  • a service area;

  • stands for 130 people;
  • toilet facilities for spectators;
