GMU Takes Part in Economic Forum in Karpacz
From 3 to 5 September 2024, the 33rd Economic Forum was held in Karpacz. Taking part in the Forum as an expert, which is taking place under the slogan ‘A Time for New Leaders: Shaping the Future Together’, was HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit.
The second day of the Forum, saw a debate on the ‘Safety Culture in Transport’, as part of the 6th ‘Safety Culture Forum - Benefits and Costs’ organised by the Rail Transport Authority.
The outstanding experts in rail, maritime and air transport discussed the opportunities and risks to the development of transport safety. Panellists were looking for answers to several key questions from the area of security culture, discussing, with discussions touching on topics such as the cost-effectiveness of investments in safety and whether there is more than a material aspect to the issue.
The experts noted that maritime, rail, and air transport are particularly vulnerable to human error. Despite many differences, maritime and rail transport both face similar problems, with 70-90% of maritime transport accidents estimated to result directly or indirectly from human error.
Professor Adam Weintrit, the Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, pointed out that technical culture is a continuum and improvements come only after years of experience.
Human error can be eliminated by committing to effective training and verification of our abilities. It’s not enough to just adopt a certain standard. The effects of change take time to materialise.
Roman Ożóg, the Director of the Department of Civil Aviation Safety Management, stressed the importance of reporting errors to avoid and prevent incidents in the future. Professor Paweł Zalewski, Dean of the Faculty of Navigation at the Maritime University of Szczecin, drew attention to the importance of teaching the appropriate course of action during the training of future crews to prepare them for various emergencies.
HM The Rector Professor Adam Weintrit also took part in a discussion on innovative infrastructure projects as part of a debate entitled ‘European Transport Infrastructure in the Face of Change: Geopolitics and Climate’ moderated by Adrian Furgalski, the CEO of the ‘TOR’ Economic Advisors Team and the Chair of Railway Business Forum.
The Economic Forum The event is the largest political and economic in Central and Eastern Europe. During the Forum, discussions are held on security, prospects for economic development, and modern challenges and crisis management, and specific solutions and innovative ideas are proposed.
