GMU Sports and Recreation Centre Receives “Czas Gdyni” Award

On 10 February 2025, during a ceremonial session of the Gdynia City Council on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the award of city status to Gdynia, Gdynia Maritime University’s Sports and Recreation Centre, the construction of which was completed in 2024, was granted a special award. Taking part in the ceremony was HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit.

The anniversary session of Gdynia City Council at the Witold Gombrowicz Theatre was led by Tadeusz Szemiot, the Chair of Gdynia City Council. He was accompanied on stage by the Major of Gdynia, Aleksandra kosiorek. In attendance at the ceremony were representatives of the central and regional governments, and city authorities, as well as representatives of the worlds of science, education, culture, sport, the media, and veteran communities.

The Czas Gdyni Award in the category of architecture was granted to the Art Projekt K&M design studio for the GMU Sports and Recreation Centre. Established in 1995, the award is given in the categories of Development Projects and Architecture. When selecting the winners, the awards committee follows specific criteria each year, taking into account the amount of capital invested, the number of jobs created, the impact on the promotion of the city, the attracting and activating capital or the architectural value of the building, its impact on the environment and more.

The GMU Sports and Recreation Centre is a modern building, which the University opened for use in May 2024. The facility is located adjacent to Tricity Landscape Park, and has good transport connection with the centre of the city. The Centre includes a sports hall, gym, fitness rooms, saunas, as well as conference rooms equipped with multimedia facilities and guest rooms.

      

Also awarded during the ceremony for the 31st time were Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski medals for outstanding service in the development of the city and the port, and for the renown of Gdynia in Poland and around the world. World-renowned historian, Professor Norman Davies, was made an Honorary Citizen of Gdynia.
