WAPS Operational Course

WAPS Training Programme

In 2024, the Gdynia Maritime University Sailing and Watersports Centre, in cooperation with Stödig Ship Management, launched a specialised training programme for crews operating vessels equipped with WAPS technology. The first edition served as a pilot programme, allowing us to develop and validate the training concept, while the second edition was refined based on operational experience and participant feedback. The five-day intensive programme combines structured theoretical instruction with practical sailing, enabling participants to develop a deeper understanding of wind dynamics, vessel behaviour and route optimisation, with a particular focus on the effective use of wind as a renewable energy source in modern maritime operations.

Training Methods & Strategies

Each training programme is designed on the basis of a comprehensive operational needs analysis, ensuring that the competencies developed during the course are directly aligned with the strategic objectives of the company and current industry standards. Our methodology combines structured classroom instruction with intensive, hands-on maritime training, creating a learning environment where theoretical knowledge is immediately translated into practical skills. This integrated approach allows participants not only to understand complex operational concepts but also to apply them effectively in real maritime conditions, enhancing decision-making, situational awareness and operational confidence at sea.

The instructional team represents a unique professional synergy. It includes merchant navy officers, master mariners, sailing instructors and yachtmasters who combine extensive offshore operational experience with practical command of conventional vessels, WAPS-equipped ships, tall ships and sailing yachts. This operational integration allows our team to connect traditional seamanship with modern wind-assisted propulsion technologies, providing training that reflects the realities of contemporary maritime operations.

Sail Training and Practical Experience

Since 2013, the Sailing and Watersports Centre of Gdynia Maritime University has been authorised by the Minister of Sport and Tourism to conduct examinations for all types of sailing and motorboat certificates. The Centre continues the traditions of the former Maritime Higher School Water Sports Centre and the Maritime Academy Sailing Centre, combining long-standing maritime heritage with modern training methods.

We offer a wide range of courses and specialised workshops related to maritime activities, including sailing and motorboat training, navigation workshops, radar courses for sailors, and SRC courses organised in cooperation with the GMDSS study programme. As an academic unit of the University, we conduct training using the expertise of our staff, students and graduates, while also benefiting from the University’s scientific facilities and extensive professional experience.

Our training activities are supported by both a diverse fleet and well-equipped shore facilities. We operate a range of sailing and motor yachts that enable us to conduct practical training in various maritime conditions. On land, we provide dedicated teaching spaces, including seminar and lecture rooms equipped with audiovisual systems, creating a comfortable environment for both theoretical instruction and preparation for practical training.
