GMU Celebrates 107th Anniversary of Poland's Regaining of Independence
On Tuesday 11 September 2025, Gdynia celebrated the 107th anniversary of Poland's regaining of independence. A traditional parade of white and red attended by the University leaders, students, and staff passed through the city in celebration of Poland's regaining of independence in 1918.
The parade began at noon, setting off from Aleja Marszałka Piłsudskiego and passing through Świętojańska street, the city's main thoroughfare, to reach Skwer Kościuszki, where an official ceremony took place in front of the Maritime Poland monument, during which tribute was paid to the heroes who fought for the nation's freedom. Participating in the ceremony were the city's authorities, the heads of the Polish Navy, and representatives of social organisations, accompanied by an honorary military guard.
On behalf of Gdynia Maritime University, the following representatives laid flowers at the base of the monument, accompanied by the University's Guard of Honour: HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit; Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk, Deputy Rector for Cooperation and Development; Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy Rector for Science; Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Student Affairs and Education; and Filip Malata, Chancellor.
The ceremony was accompanied by a memorial roll call. The day also featured a ceremonial salute – 21 symbolic shots fired from the deck of the ORP Błyskawica, and a military parade.
Also taking part in the parade were groups representing Gdynia schools, universities, and social organisations The Independence Parade ended in the Council of Europe park, where students, staff, and their families came together for a group photo and refreshments.
