HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, has been presented with a symbolic flag celebrating Gdynia’s centenary.  The flag will be displayed on board the Dar Młodzieży during the city's centenary year 2026.

On 17 November 2025, HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, took part in a ceremonial press conference for the announcement of celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Gdynia. In connection with the jubilee, a series of outdoor events, concerts, and attractions has been planned for 2026.

During a conference held at the Gdynia Musical Theatre, the Rector was presented with the symbolic flag by the Mayor of Gdynia, Aleksandra Kosiorek, and Tadeusz Szemiota, Chair of Gdynia City Council. The flag will be flown during the training voyages on the Dar Mlodzieży in the 2026 sailing season. Also representing the University at the press conference was Captain Dariusz Jellonnek, Director of the Maritime Operations Department.

The aim of the project, which also involves two of Gdynia’s other sailing icons, namely the Pogoria and the Zawisza Czarna, is not limited to creating awareness around the 100-year maritime history of the city and its residents. It also involves the integration of its young society through highlighting the city’s sailing tradition. Celebrations of Gdynia’s centenary will therefore symbolically take place on all seas and oceans around the world starting on 10 February 2026.

In April 2025, representatives from the worlds of business, culture, academia, as well as members of parliament, diplomats, and local government officials, were invited to join the Honorary Committee for the Celebration of the Centenary of Gdynia. Invitations to join the Committee were received by Rector Professor Adam Weintrit and Małgorzata Sokołowska, long-time editor-in-chief of the University’s Maritime Newsletter.
