University Hosts Angolan Ambassador for a Meeting
The University's leaders have hosted the Angolan Ambassador to Poland, Manuel Pedro Chaves, for a meeting to discuss the potential for cooperation in the education of students and doctoral candidates, the exchange of academic staff, and the conduct of joint research between Gdynia Maritime University and Angola. The cooperation would include the Namibian Maritime and Fisheries Institute, with which the University has previously collaborated.
On 17 November 2025, His Excellency The Ambassador of the Republic of Angola in Poland, Manuel Pedro Chaves, met with a delegation of GMU representatives led by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit. The subject of the meeting was the discussion of cooperation between Gdynia Maritime University and the state of Angola, including the Namibian Maritime and Fisheries Institute.
Joining the Rector in representing the University in the discussions was Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Education and Student Affairs; Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy Rector for Science; Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk, Deputy Rector for Internationalisation, Cooperation, and Development; Filip Malata, Chancellor; Dr Piotr Jankowski, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering; Professor Ireneusz Czarnowski, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science; Professor Andrzej Miszczak, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering; Dr Marzena Popek, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Quality Science, and Captain Dariusz Jellonek, Director of the Maritime Operations Department.
Among the topics discussed during the meeting were matters concerning sea training resulting from the STCW Convention, and the possibilities for cooperation in this respect. During the meeting the two sides also recalled the previous cooperation in Angola between Gdynia Maritime University and the then Academy of Fisheries and Marine Studies in Namibia, involving the development of an organisational concept, action plans for the university in terms of teaching and research, as well as study plans and programmes together with textbooks, and also the participation of the University’s staff in the design of laboratories.
During the visit, His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Poland, Manuel Pedro Chaves, had the opportunity to familiarise himself with the University’s structure, as well as its research and teaching activities, and GMU’s national and international cooperation portfolio, including as a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). The meeting was accompanied by a visit to the laboratories and simulators at each of the University’s faculties, as well as a tour of the research and training vessel Horyzont II.
The parties expressed their willingness to meet again in the coming months to determine the details of cooperation in relation to maritime education, including the training of Angolan students in maritime disciplines at Gdynia Maritime University.
