Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Poland Visits GMU

His Excellency The Ambassador of the Philippines to Poland, Alan Deniega, has visited Gdynia Maritime University to discuss cooperation in relation to maritime education and the exchange of academic staff.

On 18 November 2025, HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit, welcomed to the University a delegation from the Philippines headed by His Excellency The Ambassador of the Philippines to Poland, Alan Deniega. The Ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Dr Rachel M. Deniega, Conrado B. Demdem, Minister and General Consul, and Chloe Silverio, Assistant Ambassador and Attaché for Culture. 

Also representing Gdynia Maritime University at the meeting were: Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Education and Student Affairs; Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy Rector for Science; Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk, Deputy Rector for Internationalisation, Cooperation and Development; Captain Dariusz Jellonek, Director of the Maritime Operations Department.

During the visit, the delegation from the Philippines were presented with the study programmes offered by GMU, the research projects currently conducted by the University, as well as the most important areas of collaboration with industry. Discussions also focused on the University’s partnerships at home and abroad. Cultural similarities between the two nations were noted several times during the meeting. Additionally, the University’s wide range of study programmes and its strong maritime tradition make it a particularly interesting academic partner for the Philippines.

The next part of the visit were presentations of various simulators at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The final item on the agenda was a visit to the Faculty of Navigation for a ship’s bridge simulator demonstrattion. A special highlight was an unexpected visit to the Faculty’s Planetarium, where the Ambassador of the Philippines, Alan Deniega, had the chance to discover the secrets of astronavigation in an interactive format.

The parties expressed their willingness to meet again to determine the details of cooperation in relation to maritime education, including the education of Philippine students in maritime disciplines at GMU, and the exchange of academic staff.
