GMU Leaders Take Part in Ceremony in Memory of the Victims of December 1970
On 17 December 2025, a ceremony was held in memory of the victims of the tragic events of December 1970 in Gdynia. The ceremony was attended by representatives of Gdynia Maritime University.
Gdynia marked the 55th anniversary of the tragic events of December 1970 in a solemn ceremony on the morning of 17 December 2025. Representing Gdynia Maritime University at the ceremony were HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit; Filip Malata, GMU Chancellor; Captain Dariusz Jellonek, Director of the Ship Operations Department; and the GMU Guard of honour, who provided the ceremonial flag guard and an honour guard during the wreath-laying ceremony.
Also in attendance were: the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki; the Mayor of Gdynia, Aleksandra Kosiorek, as well as members of parliament; local government authorities; and representatives of Gdynia ship yard and the maritime industry, and local residents.
The ceremony included the reading of a Roll Call of Remembrance and the firing of a ceremonial salute. On behalf of the entire academic community of the Maritime University of Gdynia, HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, laid flowers at the Monument to the Victims of December 1970, paying tribute to those killed and injured in the tragic events of that month.
The ceremony’s military setting was provided by the Polish Navy’s Guard of Honour and the Polish Navy’s Ceremonial Orchestra.
