University of Montenegro Nominated IAMU Region 1 Representative
On 16 February 2026, elections were held to the International Executive Board of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) for the Region 1 (Europe and Africa) for the years 2027-2028. Gdynia Maritime University was one of nine candidates involved.
The meeting of the IAMU members – representatives of Universities from the Europe and Africa region took place online. The aim of the meeting was to choose a university that will be involved in the work of the International Executive Board for the term beginning in April 2027 and ending in March 2029.
GMU was represented by: HM The Rector Professor Adam Weintrit and GMU Plenipotentiary for IAMU Affairs, Dr Adam Przybyłowski. The University was one of nine institutions which declared their readiness to take on this prestigious role.

During the meeting, each candidate institution presented its academic and teaching potential, achievements to date, and plans for activity within IAMU structures. Following a Q&A session and discussion, an online vote was held. The election was won by the University of Montenegro (Faculty of Maritime Studies, Kotor).
HM The Rector of GMU congratulated the Montenegrin representatives and wished them productive work on the Executive Board. He also stressed the importance of continuing the initiatives previously developed by GMU, aimed at strengthening international cooperation and addressing key challenges facing the maritime sector, such as navigational safety and the protection of the marine environment.
The International Executive Board the main decision-making body with IAMU. Founded in 1999, the Association brings together leading maritime universities from around the world, with the goal of maintaining the highest global standards in Maritime Education and Training (MET). Participation in the Board’s work enables a tangible influence on the policies and development strategies of this industry, which is vital to the world economy.

GMU Plenipotentiary for IAMU Affairs
The International Association of Maritime Universities IAMU is a global network comprising 83 members from 45 countries representing leading maritime universities offering study programmes at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.
Members are divided into three geographical regions: Region 1 (Europe and Africa – 49 members), Region 2 (Asia, the Pacific and Oceania – 21 members), and Region 3 (the Americas – 11 members).
In addition to regular university members, IAMU also includes special members – The Nippon Foundation (a permanent special member) and the World Maritime University (WMU) – as well as associate members.
To ensure effective operations, four standing committees have been established within the International Executive Board (IEB): Policy and Planning (chaired by the IAMU President), Academic Affairs, Liaison, and Finance. Committee members are elected from among the representatives serving on the IEB.
