Ceremony for IMO International Day for Women in Maritime Takes Place at GMU
On 20 May 2025, a ceremonial gala was held at the GMU Faculty of Navigation on the occasion of International Day for Women in Maritime 2025. The event was organised by WISTA Poland – the Society for Women in the Maritime Economy and Trade, in cooperation with the Master Mariner’s Association.
The occasion provided an exceptional opportunity to honour women, who, through their activity, involvement, and professionalism, support the development of the maritime economy. The programme of events included a discussion panel, moderated by Iwona Wysocka and involving female leaders within the maritime sector, as well as inspiring talks by Joanna Ryngwelska and Olga Wantula.
A particularly significant moment during the ceremony was the award of the Captain Danuta Kobylińska-Walas medal, also known as the “Women in the Maritime Sector” medal. The decoration, which was established in honour of the first female Polish master mariner, is awarded by the Council of Master Mariners, on the recommendation of WISTA Poland to outstanding women within the maritime sector.
It is with a great deal of pride and joy that we announce that among this year’s winners is GMU Associate Professor Dr Joanna Kizielewicz of the Department of Management and Economics at the Faculty of Management and Quality Science. This special award is in recognition of her long-term involvement and contribution to the development of science and activity in the promotion of the role of women in maritime.
The medal not only commemorates the pioneering role of Danuta Kobylińska-Walas but also inspires the next generation of women to boldly shape their own future in the maritime world.
Congratulations!
