Gdynia Maritime University has been awarded funding for two complementary projects submitted as part of the 2025 Call of the Welcome to Poland Programme.

The programme aims to internationalise and enhance the competitiveness of Polish higher education and research institutions on the international stage by strengthening their capacity to receive and support people from abroad.

The project ‘KOMPAS’ (Kompetencje, Otwartość, Mobilność – Kierunkami Rozwoju Umiędzynarodowiania UMG) focuses on developing GMU’s internationalisation through competences, openness, and mobility and will be implemented by the GMU Department of International Cooperation. The project has been awarded funding in the total amount of 549,990.42 PLN. The Project ‘Wypływamy na szerokie wody’ (Venturing into Open Waters) will be implemented by the University’s Department of Science and has been granted funding to the value of 350,550 PLN. Both projects will be carried out between 1 May 2026 and 30 April 2028.

Among the activities planned under the projects are the creation of a Welcome Centre at GMU, local, national, and international study visits, training courses – including intercultural training for a broad group of university staff, legislative training for administrative personnel on the employment, admission, and support of people from abroad, as well as English-language courses focused on communication and teaching. The project also envisages the organisation of international academic seminars, the launch of an enhanced dedicated English-language University website as a comprehensive information platform for international students, staff and partners, the production of a series of professional promotional films in English, the establishment of GMU profiles on international higher education platforms, and the development of a concept for a system involving a network of the University’s international alumni, with a view to building long-term cooperation in promoting Gdynia Maritime University abroad.

The Welcome to Poland Programme is funded by the European Union under the European Funds for Social Development 2021–2027 (FERS) programme and implemented within the framework of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) project entitled ‘Wsparcie instytucji szkolnictwa wyższego i nauki w obsłudze osób cudzoziemskich oraz Polek i Polaków wyjeżdżających za granicę’ (Support for higher education and research institutions in assisting foreign nationals and Poles going abroad), project no.
