On 18 March 2026, GMU leaders, headed by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, met with the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Dr Arkadiusz Marchewka. During the meeting at the University, it was agreed that later this year, the Gdynia Maritime University will receive PLN 131 million for the construction of a successor to the Dar Młodzieży sail training ship. This amount constitutes the first installment of funding for the project, which is due to be implemented in 2025–2028.

HM The Rector Professor Adam Weintrit stressed that the event is of huge significance for the University but also for the entire maritime economy. The Rector reminded those gathered that:

The new ship will serve as a practical training vessel for future maritime professionals, while also needing to be both fast and modern.

The Rector also referred to the challenges and expectations associated with the project:

We hope we will not disappoint you, after all, the Dar Młodzieży is the pride of our country. [...] I trust that the new ship will also go down in maritime history and will continue the legacy of its predecessor.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Dr Arkadiusz Marchewka, commented:

What had been discussed and promised for many years is finally becoming a reality. The University has secured funding and is fully prepared; now all that remains is to launch the tender to select the shipyard that will build the new sailing vessel – one that will be our pride on seas and oceans around the world.

Taking part in the meeting with the Deputy Minister on behalf of GMU were Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy Rector for Science; Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Student Affairs and Education; Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk, Deputy Rector for Internationalisation, Cooperation and Development; Filip Malata, GMU Chancellor; as well as the Faculty Deans, the Bursar, and Directors.

A year ago, 30 September 2025, saw the historic decision for Gdynia Maritime University and the Polish maritime industry: the approval of funding for the construction of the successor to Dar Młodzieży, which the Senate of GMU, headed by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, had worked to secure since 2020. On that day, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution on the multiannual programme titled ‘Construction of Vessels for the Maritime Universities in 2025–2029,’ prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure, which enables the construction of a new training vessel for Gdynia Maritime University.
