On 9 April 2025 at 18:00, Gdynia Maritime University will host the first lecture in a series organised as part of the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Gdynia. The event will take place in the auditorium at the Faculty of Navigation at 3 Jana Pawła II Avenue in Gdynia, next to the planetarium.
Entitled 'The Baltic – Our Sea. What Really Lies Beneath the Waters off Gdynia?', the lecture will be delivered by Professor Magdalena Bogalecka of Gdynia Maritime University.
As Professor Bogalecka explains:
The Baltic Sea is a young, shallow and almost entirely enclosed body of water, making it particularly vulnerable to pollution and a wide range of environmental pressures. During the lecture 'The Baltic – Our Sea. What Really Lies Beneath the Waters off Gdynia?', I will discuss how maritime transport, offshore activity, wrecks and dumped weapons resting on the seabed, as well as everyday human activity on land, including far from the coast, affect the condition of the Baltic and why the consequences of these changes remain noticeable for many years.
The lecture forms part of a wider series prepared by Gdynia’s higher education institutions in cooperation with the City of Gdynia.
As Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy-Rector for Science at GMU, notes:
Through this lecture series, we want to highlight the role of Gdynia’s higher education centres in the city’s development and actively contribute to the celebrations of its centenary. I am pleased that Gdynia Maritime University is part of this important anniversary project, dedicated above all to the residents of the city.
Gdynia Maritime University has prepared nine lectures as part of the series, all linked to the University’s teaching and research areas. The lectures will be held on selected Thursdays at 6:00 pm (18:00), according to the schedule available on the University’s website, and delivered in Polish. Admission is free. Attendees will also have the opportunity to speak to the lecturer after the event.
