Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport Representatives Visit GMU

On 22-24 April, a delegation from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) visited Gdynia Maritime University for a series of meetings and study visits. Representing the higher education centre in Egypt were Professor Ismail Abdel Ghafar Ismail Farag, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and Professor Dr Hesham M. Helal, Dean of Maritime Postgraduate Studies Institute, President of Arab Institute of Navigation (AIN), and Secretary General of International Association of Institutes of Navigation (IAIN).

The focus of the meetings involving University leaders headed by HM The Rector of GMU, Adam Weintrit; were opportunities for the development of cooperation in relation to education, student and doctoral candidate exchanges, and teaching staff. The visit also provided an opportunity for both sides to familiarise themselves with each other's activities. During their stay, guests visited the GMU Centre for Offshore Industry, as well as the simulators at the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Navigation. Gdynia Maritime University was also represented by Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Education and Student Affairs; Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy Rector for Science; and Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk, Deputy Rector for Internationalisation, Cooperation and Development. 

A final meeting between the two sides held in the Senate Hall at the end of the delegation’s stay was also attended by Chancellor Filip Malata, Piotr Jankowski, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering; Andrzej Miszczak, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; Marzenna Popek, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Quality Science; Krzysztof Czaplewski, Director of the GMU Maritime Institute; Dariusz Jellonnek, Director of the Ship Operations Department; Magdalena Wołowiec, Director of the Rector's Office; Eugeniusz Paweł Orzeszek, University Bursar; and Adam Przybyłowski, IAMU Contact Person. Both sides expressed their will to continue cooperating, and the decision was made to appoint a 3-person working team to agree to establish three-member working groups to further elaborate its details, including with regard to joint degree programmes and the exchange of cadets on the University's training ships.

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport is a maritime higher education institution established in 1972. Its main academic centre is located in Alexandria. Since its foundation, AASTMT has focused on educating and training personnel for the maritime economy, including navigators, marine engineering officers, and specialists in transport, logistics and port management. The university combines teaching with practical training. AASTMT cooperates with maritime organisations, including IAMU and the IMO, and is an important academic centre supporting the development of the maritime economy in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The visit of AASTMT to GMU is the result of the cooperation agreement signed by the two education centres in June 2025. The agreement was signed by HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit and Professor Ismail Abdel Ghafar Ismail Farag, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime.
