On 27 May 2026, the Culture and Media Committee and the Local Government and State Administration Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Poland held an off-site joint meeting at the Emigration Museum in Gdynia.  The event was attended by the Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit. The session focused on efforts to include the modernist centre of Gdynia on the UNESCO World Heritage List as well as issues surrounding the metropolitan act for Pomerania.

The meeting was opened by the Marshal of the Senate, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, who highlighted the significance of Gdynia’s centenary jubilee this year and the city's role in shaping Poland’s cultural heritage.

The first item on the agenda concerned the application to list the Gdynia Modernist City Centre as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Throughout the discussion, speakers repeatedly emphasised the unique character of Gdynia’s modernist architecture. The senators unanimously adopted a position supporting the bid to list the city's modernist centre. The document, signed that day by Marshal Kidawa-Błońska, was formally presented to the Mayor of Gdynia, Aleksandra Kosiorek.

The committees also discussed the metropolitan act for Pomerania, focusing on its importance for cultural development and heritage protection within metropolitan areas. Representatives of local governments, academia, and regional development experts all took part in the debate. Participants in the discussion included the Mayor of Sopot, Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim; the President of the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area Management Board, Michał Glaser; and the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, Professor Piotr Stepnowski.
