University Signs Contract for Construction of Computer Science Centre

A state-of-the-art Computer Science Centre will soon be built on Gdynia Maritime University's main campus on Morska Street, marking another major step in the University's continued infrastructure development. The project will be financed through a targeted grant from the Ministry of Infrastructure, supplemented by the University's own funds.

The contract for the investment has been awarded to Warsaw-based ZAB-BUD Sp. z o.o., which will deliver the project under a design-and-build contract. Construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with the new facility scheduled for completion and opening in the second or third quarter of 2028.

The contract signing ceremony was attended by representatives of both Gdynia Maritime University and the contractor. Representing the University were Associate Professor Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Education and Student Affairs; Associate Professor Dr Dariusz Barbucha, Deputy Rector for Science; Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk, Deputy Rector for Internationalisation, Cooperation and Development; Sławomir Kalicki, Chair of the University Council; and Filip Malata, University Chancellor. Also present were former Rectors Professor Piotr Jędrzejowicz and Professor Józef Lisowski; Professor Ireneusz Czarnowski, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science; Magdalena Wołowiec, Director of the Rector's Office; Master Mariner Dariusz Jellonek, Director of the Maritime Operations Department; Eugeniusz Paweł Orzeszek, Bursar; and Małgorzata Bielska, Deputy Chancellor for Technical Affairs. Representing ZAB-BUD Sp. z o.o. were Piotr Panufnik, Contract Coordinator, and Jarosław Stobba, Site Manager.

Designed to support teaching, research, and innovation, the new Computer Science Centre will become the home of the Faculty of Computer Science, established in 2024 as the fifth faculty of Gdynia Maritime University.

The building has been designed as a modern, energy-efficient facility that meets the evolving needs of both students and staff. It will feature advanced laboratories, lecture theatres, server rooms, technical facilities, staff offices, and state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure, creating an environment that supports both education and cutting-edge research.

The four-storey building, with one underground level, will have a footprint of approximately 996 m² and nearly 4,048 m² of usable floor space. Standing 17 metres high, it will have a total volume of around 19,096 m³.

The new Centre will include:

  • 8 specialist laboratories,
  • a 100-seat auditorium,
  • 7 lecture halls,
  • 24 office rooms,
  • dedicated student spaces,
  • server rooms and technical facilities,
  • an underground car park with 19 parking spaces,
  • an emergency shelter.

The Computer Science Centre represents the next phase in the transformation of Gdynia Maritime University's campus. It will be followed by another key investment – a new student residence to be built adjacent to the University's Sports and Recreation Centre, which opened in 2024. Once completed, the three buildings will be linked by pedestrian walkways to form a cohesive campus complex. Their architecture has been carefully designed to complement the historic character of the Morska Street campus while meeting contemporary standards, in accordance with heritage conservation requirements.
