GMU Leaders Attend Meeting on the Future of Energy Education in Pomerania

Gdynia Maritime University has joined senior government ministers and energy industry leaders to align higher education with the rapidly growing nuclear and offshore wind sectors in Pomerania. Rector Professor Adam Weintrit and Deputy Rector for Science Dr Dariusz Barbucha represented the university at high-level talks hosted by Polish Education Minister Barbara Nowacka in Sopot on 3 August 2026.
The talks brought together regional university leaders, government representatives, and executives from key energy firms, including PGE Baltica, ORLEN, and Polish Nuclear Power Plants (PEJ). Discussions focused on adapting vocational, technical, and higher education programmes to ensure Poland's energy transition is backed by a highly skilled workforce.
Participants agreed that the success of the energy transition will primarily depend on preparing appropriately qualified staff. GMU leaders emphasised that the promotion of new fields of study among young people is essential for sustaining long-term regional development.
The meeting formed part of a broader regional strategy to establish Pomerania as an international hub for clean energy expertise and maritime engineering.
