Dar Młodzieży to Undergo Maintenance Following Atlantic Leg of Voyage – Return to Gdynia on 23 September

After the ship sailed from New York to Boston, damage was found to the propeller blades. It is believed to have occurred during a storm in the roadstead off New York on 3 July 2026, the day before the ceremonial parade marking the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Rector Professor Adam Weintrit said:

The demanding Atlantic voyage, undertaken by the Dar Młodzieży to take part in the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, has unfortunately shown that, despite regular maintenance and repair work, the training ship is now an ageing vessel. Each successive season brings greater challenges in keeping the ship in full technical and operational condition.

A technical assessment of the damage has confirmed that the voyage can continue. We have also decided that the repairs will be carried out in Poland, at a time that will allow us to fulfil our previously planned commitments. This incident, however, is another argument for the urgent need to build a modern successor to the Dar Młodzieży.

Following the voyage, the Dar Młodzieży will arrive at Morska Stocznia Remontowa GRYFIA S.A. in Szczecin on 16 August 2026, where the necessary maintenance work is scheduled to continue until 27 August. Arrival in Szczecin will also mark the end of the Atlantic leg of sea training for second-year Navigation students, who joined the ship during its stay in New York.

On 28 August, the Dar Młodzieży will sail for Hamburg, arriving on 1 September. The next port of call will be Stavanger, from where the vessel will set sail for Gdynia on 14 September and is expected to arrive on 23 September 2026.
