From Simulation to Safe Navigation: The Next Open Lecture in the GMU Series Marking the Centenary of Gdynia

The number of ships in the Baltic Sea area is growing every year. Thanks to available technology, we are able to track their movements virtually worldwide, and based on information obtained from the Automatic Identification System (AIS), it is possible to reconstruct and analyse vessel transit routes, as well as identify risks, including among others, collision or grounding.

Modelling enables us to assess whether adopted navigation solutions are effective and to improve those requiring change, while computer simulations allow for an even better evaluation of the solutions under analysis.

The speaker, Agnieszka Kerbrat, MSc highlights the analytical processes (simulations, maritime traffic modelling) supporting vessel traffic management:

Gdynia is one of the largest seaports in the Baltic Sea area. To ensure the safety of ships and navigation, various types of simulation and maritime traffic modelling are used to organise vessel traffic. With the growing demand for the transport of people and goods by sea, the need to ensure the safety of vessel traffic increases.

The talk will present the process of data collection and analysis, as well as how the obtained data is used for maritime traffic modelling and organisation.

Agnieszka Kerbrat graduated from the Faculty of Navigation with the equivalent of an MSc in Navigation in 2011, followed shortly after by an Officer of the Watch Certificate. She completed her sea training placements working on passenger ships, container vessels, and in the offshore sector.

In 2016 she joined the Faculty of Navigation at Gdynia Maritime University and obtained a Chief Mate Certificate. She is currently also an examiner for the Central Maritime Examination Committee and a lay assessor of the Maritime Chamber.

Her research focuses on improving navigation safety through the analysis and model-based study of vessel traffic, including in the Danish Straits.

The lecture series for Gdynia's centenary is a collaborative initiative run jointly by Gdynia Maritime University, the Polish Naval Academy, WSB Merito University Gdynia, and the Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski University of Administration and Business, in cooperation with the City of Gdynia. The event is part of the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the city and aims to popularise knowledge and familiarise residents with the scientific activities of Gdynia's higher education institutions.

The talk will be given in Polish. Admission is free.
