GMU and Malta: Prospects for Academic Cooperation

On 14 September 2026, celebrations marking the 62nd anniversary of the independence of Malta and the 55th anniversary of Polish-Maltese diplomatic relations took place at Art Box Experience in Warsaw’s Norblin Factory. Gdynia Maritime University was represented by Dr Joanna Kizielewicz, Deputy Rector for Partnerships and International Relations, alongside Dorota Barzowska, Head of the International Mobility Team.
The event was hosted by Gavin Gulia, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Poland. The celebrations were accompanied by the opening of the exhibition Stop! Open Your Eyes to Malta, presenting the history, culture, and heritage of the island.
GMU’s contacts with Malta are reflected in the University’s educational initiatives. Under the Sea of Competence project, a study visit to the University of Malta has been scheduled for navigation students from 17 to 23 September 2026. The itinerary also includes visits to the International Ocean Institute, the International Maritime Law Institute, the Oceanography Malta Research Group, and the Port of Valletta. The visit is supervised by Dr Grzegorz Rutkowski, GMU Associate Professor.
Malta’s maritime traditions and Gdynia Maritime University’s institutional profile provide a foundation for exploring further areas of cooperation. Maritime transport, logistics, and sustainable development can serve as themes for joint research projects and educational initiatives. Developing academic links may also foster student and staff exchanges, as well as the sharing of experience in training personnel for the maritime economy.
