GMU Expands International Cooperation Within the One Water Alliance

Gdynia Maritime University was represented at the event by Dr Marcin Kalinowski, Head of the Department of Economics and Spatial Policy at the GMU Maritime Institute, and Dorota Barzowska, Head of the International Mobility Team operating within the GMU International Cooperation Office. The presence of representatives from the Maritime Institute and the International Cooperation Office allowed the academic perspective to be combined with activities aimed at developing international partnerships and the internationalisation of the University.

The keynote speakers of the two-day event were representatives of the European Commission: Andreea Strachinescu (representing the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Head of the Maritime Innovation, Marine Knowledge and Investment Unit), Antongiulio Marin (from the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Head of the InvestEU Implementation Department), Joachim Maes (Team Leader in the Sustainable Freshwater Management Unit in the Directorate-General for Environment), Chiara Colella Kyriakou (Policy Officer in the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture), as well as Raúl Mérida Gordillo (Commissioner for Recovery in the Government of the Autonomous Community of Valencia), and Walter Eevers from the European Innovation Council.

The first day of the event was devoted primarily to concepts for joint international projects under Horizon Europe calls of the European Commission dedicated to maritime topics. During the second day, discussions addressed opportunities for carrying out international projects dedicated to education and the development of skills and competences under Erasmus+ programme calls.

A major benefit of the University’s participation was the development of concrete concepts for new international research and innovation projects, alongside active networking to build international project consortia. The established relations may lead, in subsequent stages, to the development of joint research and educational projects, greater GMU involvement in Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ programmes, and new mobility opportunities for staff and students. The GMU International Cooperation Office, within which the International Mobility Team operates, is involved in this process. Combining project cooperation with academic mobility supports the internationalisation of GMU, the expansion of its foreign partner network, and the enhancement of the University's recognition within international academic and expert networks.
