Christmas Tree Lights Up the Dar Młodzieży
The masts of Dar Młodzieży are aglow with the light of 500 bulbs in the shape of a Christmas tree – the tallest in the Tricity.
At exactly 4pm on St Nicholas Day, 6th December 2021, the bows of the sailing ship Dar Młodzieży were awash in light as 500 bulbs flickered into life on her masts.
With these striking illuminations, Dar Młodzieży, Gdynia’s most recognisable symbol, joined in the festive decoration of the city for Christmas 2021. The turning on of the lights was attended by GMU Rector Professor Adam Weintrit, Director of the Ship Management Office Professor Bogumił Łączyński, Mayor of Gdynia Dr Wojciech Szczurek, and many locals, students and tourists.
The tradition of illuminating Dar Młodzieży during the Christmas season began when the sailing ship was moored on the Los Angeles coast during what was its second circumvention of the globe - the “Independence Voyage”.
Dar Młodzieży is a three masted frigate. The ship’s tallest masts - the mainsail and foresail - are 49.5m tall, whereas the cutter mast is a little shorter at 46.5m in length. Christmas lights decorate the tops of all the masts - at their tallest point at a height of 60m above sea level. The tallest Christmas tree decoration in the Tricity needed 500 metres of cable and more than 500 bulbs.
