The reflection of a long sailing tradition of the University is the Sailing Centre of Gdynia Maritime University. The most important task of the Centre is to conduct sailing and motorboat training as well as specialised training courses realised for the needs of sailors and motormen.
Since 2013 the Centre independently has been organising exams necessary to obtain yacht and motorboat licenses in water tourism. These exams can be held due to the fact that the Ministry of Sports and Tourism officially accepted Gdynia Maritime University as an entity authorised to organise them. Within training activity the Sailing Centre also offers traineeship and training races. The races are held on the yacht s/v Nest, which sails all over the European seas, from the Baltic Sea through the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea up to the Mediterranean Sea. It also sails in the Atlantic Ocean. Over the last few years upon the agreement signed between Gdynia Maritime University and the Baltic Fishing Fleet State Academy in Kaliningrad the Sailing Centre has been the co-organiser of “Międzynarodowe Regaty Rektorów” (in English: the International Races of Rectors) and the organiser of “Regaty o Puchar Daru Młodzieży” (in English: the Races for Dar Młodzieży Cup).
