Documents and requirements for candidates applying for the first year of bachelor’s degree (first-cycle) studies taught in Polish at Gdynia Maritime University

In addition to registering in the IRK Online Application System, candidates applying for the first year of studies at Gdynia Maritime University are required to submit the following documents by the deadline specified by the recruitment committee of the faculty they are applying to:

  1. An application form generated from the IRK Online Application System.
  2. A secondary school leaving certificate, or a secondary school leaving certificate together with a certificate of the results of the Matura examination in individual subjects, as referred to in the Act on the Education System, or a secondary school leaving certificate issued outside Poland entitling the holder to apply for admission to higher education.

Certificates issued outside Poland should be:

  • legalised or apostilled, where applicable. This does not apply to documents issued in the European Union or to IB and EB diplomas;

CHECK WHETHER YOUR CERTIFICATE REQUIRES AN APOSTILLE OR LEGALISATION

An apostille is required for certificates issued in the following countries:

  • translated into Polish by a sworn (certified) translator;
  • accompanied by information from the Director of NAWA confirming the recognition of the certificate for the purposes of further education. This information is not required for certificates from EU, EFTA or OECD member states, certificates covered by international agreements on the recognition of education, including China and Ukraine, or IB and EB certificates.

NOTE: If your certificate is on this list, you must also pass an entrance examination in mathematics at GMU.

Information from the Director of NAWA is not required for the following certificates:

  1. A certificate confirming proficiency in Polish (see below).

Persons who do not hold Polish citizenship and who are applying for admission to studies taught in Polish are additionally required to submit, in the application folder submitted to the recruitment committee, a certificate confirming their Polish language skills.

The following are accepted as proof of Polish language proficiency:

  • Certificate of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language issued by the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language at level B2 or higher
  • ECL – European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages
  • TELC – telc GmbH, WBT Weiterbildungs-Testsysteme GmbH
  • certificate of completion of a preparatory course for undertaking studies, lasting no less than 9 months
  • diploma of graduation/degree certificate from studies with Polish as the language of instruction issued by a higher education institution operating within the higher education and science system of the Republic of Poland
  • diploma of graduation/ degree certificate from a Bachelor’s degree programme (first-cycle), a Master’s degree programme (second-cycle), or an integrated Master’s degree programme (long-cycle) in Polish philology or applied linguistics, issued by a foreign higher education institution, together with a diploma supplement or certificate confirming that the number of hours of Polish language instruction was at least 500
  • certificate of acquisition of the right to practise as a sworn translator issued by the Minister of Justice, as referred to in Article 5(2) of the Act of 25 November 2004 on the Profession of Sworn Translator, or a certificate confirming entry in the register of sworn translators
  1. Two colour photographs on a light background, signed with the candidate’s surname, first name and passport/national ID/PESEL number, and one photograph submitted electronically.

The electronic photograph must be submitted in JPG format, in colour, on a light background, without head covering or dark glasses. It should be at least 300 × 375 pixels, which allows it to be printed at 2 cm × 2.5 cm in appropriate quality. The maximum file size is 1 MB. The electronic photograph must be identical to the paper photograph submitted to the University together with the remaining documents.

  1. The original proof of payment of the application fee. If the programme does not run, the fee will be refunded in full upon the candidate’s request.


Application folder checklist (see details above for exact requirements):

  3. Certificate confirming minimum B2 level proficiency in Polish
  4. Two colour photographs and one photograph submitted electronically
  5. Application fee proof of payment


Additionally required:

  1. An insurance policy covering illness or the consequences of accidents for the period of study in Poland, or a copy of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or a declaration of joining the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ) immediately after commencing studies.
  2. A seafarer’s medical certificate – only for the maritime specialisation at the Faculty of Navigation.
  3. A medical certificate issued by an occupational medicine doctor confirming that the candidate is fit to study, including participation in practical placements – only for the Faculty of Marine Engineering.
  4. A valid sanitary-epidemiological health book (original for inspection) or the original of a valid medical certificate for sanitary-epidemiological purposes – only for the Quality Science programme.

Note: The costs of medical examinations, obtaining the health book and obtaining the certificate for sanitary-epidemiological purposes are borne by the candidate.
