Department of Marine Propulsion Plants

The Department of Marine Propulsion Plants is one of four departments within the Faculty of Marine Engineering at Gdynia Maritime University. It is closely linked to the degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, and to research conducted in the broad field of marine propulsion plant operation and maintenance. The profile of the Department’s scientific and research activity is defined by the main research areas listed below:

  • Improving the energy efficiency of marine propulsion plant operation.
  • Technical, environmental, and economic aspects of marine propulsion plant operation.
  • Diagnostics of machinery and equipment used in marine propulsion plants, including marine piston engines and auxiliary systems.
  • Potential applications of alternative fuels in marine propulsion plants.
  • Improving the performance properties of fuels and lubricating oils.

The key tasks defining the specific research objectives include:

  • Studies aimed at minimising the consumption of fuels and lubricating oils in both economic and environmental contexts.
  • Identifying new diagnostic methods within parametric diagnostics of marine machinery and equipment, including analyses of vibration signals from propulsion shafts.
  • Research on the use of alternative fuels and lubricating oils.
  • Research on methods to reduce the ageing of fuels and lubricating oils caused by contamination with trace elements.
