GMU Presented with Times Higher Education World University Rankings Certificate at LUMEN Conference

On 19 November 2024, the Deputy Rector for Science, Dr Dariusz Barbucha, accepted a certificate on behalf of Gdynia Maritime University from the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The presentation of certificates awarded to leading Polish higher education institutions included in the renowned academic rankings took place as part of the 20th LUMEN Leaders in University Management Conference.

The University features in the rankings for the first time, placing 1501+ among 2,092 higher education institutions from 115 countries. The list includes 40 such institutions from Poland. A total of 2,860 centres of higher education around the world applied for a place in the 2025 rankings.

"For many years, we have been one of the leaders in European and world rankings of maritime universities. Our strong standing within the maritime academic community is undeniable. We are delighted that in recent times the University has improved or been included for the first time in prestigious national and international rankings of a more general character, which include universities with various specialisations. This shows the increasing importance of the university's achievements and renown of its academic staff within the international community," emphasised the Deputy Rector for Science, Dr Dariusz Barbucha.

The methodology used in the creation of the THE World University Rankings includes 18 carefully calibrated indicators for the assessment of institutions in five key areas: education, research environment, research quality, cooperation with industry and international perspectives. Thanks to its detailed and comprehensive approach, the methodology enjoys the trust of students, teachers, academic staff, governments and industry experts around the world.

The presentation of awards took place during the 10th edition of the LUMEN Conference, organised by PCG Academia, the Foundation of Polish Rectors, and Times Higher Education, under the patronage of the Minister of Science. For 10 years, the conference has served as a platform for the presentation of the work of higher education institutions in the form of projects, solutions, and initiatives.

The topic of this year's event focused on the challenges faced by the authorities of Polish higher education institutions during the 2024-2028 term of office. As part of the debate, representatives discussed matters connected with the strategic management of centres of higher education and IT management. They also analysed the achievements of Polish higher education institutions in the Times World University Rankings 2025.
