Dr. Yohei Sasakawa
Gdynia Maritime University awards the title of Doctor honoris causa to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of science, culture, the economy, maritime education and social life. On 27 January 2026, the University celebrated the conferral of this prestigious title upon
Dr. Yohei Sasakawa.
On 25 September 2025, the Senate of Gdynia Maritime University passed Resolution No. 70/XVIII regarding the conferral of the honorary title of Doctor honoris causa on Dr. Yohei Sasakawa, Honorary Chair of the Nippon Foundation, by Gdynia Maritime University
'in recognition of his contributions to promoting peace, public health, and international cooperation, and for supporting international dialogue, building bridges between nations, and, above all, shaping maritime policy and ensuring safety at sea, Gdynia Maritime University confers upon Dr. Yohei Sasakawa the honorary title of Doctor honoris causa.'
The conferral of the honorary title of Doctor honoris causa was supported by the Senates of four universities:
- World Maritime University,
- Dalian Maritime University,
- Constanta Maritime University, and
- Gdynia Maritime University.
The reviewers of Dr. Yohei Sasakawa’s scholarly achievements and professional accomplishments were:
- Prof. Takeshi Nakazawa – International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU),
- Prof. Maximo Q. Mejia – World Maritime University, and
- Prof. Tomasz Tarasiuk – Gdynia Maritime University.
The laudatio was delivered by:
Prof. Janusz Mindykowski – Gdynia Maritime University.
The ceremony conferring the honorary title of Doctor honoris causa of Gdynia Maritime University took place on 27 January 2026.
