Activities, Sports and Recreation

Students at our University have countless opportunities to get involved outside the classroom – from social and civic engagement to research, culture, creativity, and sport. 

At GMU students have their own Parliament and also run Faculty Student Councils. Their representatives sit on Faculty Councils and the University Senate, ensuring students have a voice in key decisions. 

GMU student also have the opportunity to join our highly successful Academic Choir as well as a multitude of Student Scientific Societies. A full list of the Organisations and Student Societies can be found on the University’s webpages dedicated to students.

Our Sailing and Water Sports Centre is a proud reflection of the University’s long-standing sailing traditions The Centre actively participates in sailing rallies, trips, and regattas. Using it own yachts, the Centre offers sail training, internship and training voyages, sailing trips, and integration events. The SWSC actively promotes the University and supports its maritime education. 

As a University that upholds maritime tradition and ceremony, Gdynia Maritime University has its own Guard of Honour – an elite showcase of the University, dedicated to preserving its maritime traditions. The Guard’s main tasks include taking care of the organisation, security, and setting of the ceremonies organised by the University and participation in other official celebrations and events. The Guard is composed students of from all the faculties of Gdynia Maritime University and staff, who successfully pass the recruitment process and want to perfect the art of individual and team drills.  Recruitment to the Guard takes place annually during the academic year. 

For sports enthusiasts, the University offers many opportunities to be active in its Sports Clubs, including volleyball, basketball, football, handball, sailing, swimming, and martial arts. 

For social meetings, GMU students turn to Bukszpryt (Bowsprit), which as the University’s club and bar, hosts many social gatherings. Students take part in a variety of events throughout the year, including the Freshers’ Party, St Andrew’s Eve celebrations, International Evening, Hospitality Day, Graduates Evening, and traditional Sea Shanty concerts.
