Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Simulation Laboratory
The GMDSS Simulation Laboratory features a modern, interactive TRANSAS TGS 5000 simulator, comprising an instructor’s station and seven dual training stations. The instructor can assign and monitor training tasks, and deliver course content through multimedia presentations.
Training in the laboratory takes place in three modes:
Integrated mode – all stations operate within a shared environment.
Independent mode – each station functions separately for individual learning.
Mixed mode – combining group and individual exercises.
The simulator enables students to experience realistic maritime operating conditions at each station, including ship navigation via GPS, changes in sea areas, and factors such as radio wave propagation and signal interference. Students participate in predefined training scenarios that simulate ship communication priorities, including Search and Rescue (SAR) and general maritime communication.
During classes, students develop competence in communication operations and procedures through the use of GMDSS component devices and subsystems, as well as selected auxiliary elements. Equipment includes:
- VHF and MF/HF DSC and radiotelephony units
- Inmarsat C, FleetBroadband, and Fleet77 satellite terminals
- NAVTEX receiver
- EPIRB emergency beacon
- SART and AIS-SART transponders
- GMDSS portable radiotelephones
- NBDP radiotelex terminal
- GPS receiver
- AIS transceiver
- GMDSS power panel, alarm panel, and navigation radar
- VHF radiotelephone for air–sea coordination during SAR operations
- VHF radiometer
- Maritime chart display showing vessel movements
- Professional nautical publications
The laboratory provides a spacious, modern, and comfortable learning environment. It is equipped with acoustic panels for optimal sound quality, an audio-visual system with projector and screen, efficient ventilation and air conditioning, and adjustable lighting to ensure suitable conditions during extended simulator sessions.
