Faculty of Navigation

We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest.
We must learn to sail in high winds.
Arystoteles Onassis

At the GMU Faculty of Navigation, students develop the knowledge and practical skills essential for a career in international shipping. Their classroom learning is enriched through hands-on sessions in cutting-edge laboratories, and as cadets they gain invaluable experience training at sea on board the University’s ships Dar Młodzieży and Horyzont II.

Our Educational Focus

Established in 1920, the Faculty of Navigation is Gdynia Maritime University’s oldest faculty. Our education focuses on two fields of study: Navigation and Transport.
Our modern study programmes prepare students for exciting careers at sea or on land.

Departments

The Faculty of Navigation comprises the departments of Navigation, Ship Operations,
And Transport, and the Modelling and Mathematical Methods in Transport Lab.

Further specialised training and hands-on learning at the Faculty is provided by the
CST Centre and the Maritime Cyber Security Centre,

Laboratories

Students at the Faculty of Navigation benefit from access to specialist laboratories equipped with the latest technology.
From simulators and computer workstations to a planetarium — our students develop not only knowledge, but above all, practical skills.

Antoni Ledóchowski Planetarium

The Faculty of Navigation's Planetarium students attend lectures and engage in practical sessions where they practice celestial navigation techniques.

The planetarium's Skymaster ZKP 4 apparatus makes it possible to view 4,850 stars ranging from first to fifth magnitude, 38 constellation outlines, and the movement of satellites along any selected orbit. Students can explore a realistic image of the night sky from any point in the Northen Hemisphere, at any chosen time.

Sea Training Across the World's Seas and Oceans

Students studying Navigation take part in sea training on board the University’s training ships: the Dar Młodzieży and the Horyzont II, as well as sea training placements with global shipping operators.

Through their experience at sea, our students learn not only discipline and teamwork but, above all, humility and respect for the power of the sea.

Land-Based Training Placements

Students studying Transport attend training placements at renowned transport, shipping, and logistics (TSL) sector companies, including warehouses, freight forwarders, carriers, ports, terminals, shipowners’ offices, and transport administration authorities.

TransNav

The most important global forum for the exchange of views and experience in the field of maritime transport and related disciplines, the International Conference on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation, is a cyclical event organised biannually since 1995 by the Faculty of Navigation and The Nautical Institute.

Navigator’s Day

The Faculty of Navigation makes excellent use of its unique location on Gdynia’s waterfront, organising Navigator’s Day – an event that brings the Faculty community together – both on land and at sea. Sports competitions on Gdynia’s city beach and races in Gdynia Bay are just some of the highlights of this annual celebration!
